The son of the famous Italian architect Carlo Scarpa, Tobia Scarpa trained in Venice before launching his career as a as a designer of lamps, furniture and glass objects. In the early 1960s, he and his wife Afra began to design modern furniture based on the principles of Le Corbusier.

Scarpa designed the Bastiano line to provide seating that was sophisticated and elegant, yet casual and comfortable with a range of color and wood finish options. Gavina initially manufactured this sofa, which was later taken over by Knoll after they acquired Gavina in 1968.

This particular example is from the original production run and features the manufacturers sticker.
